Rides returning to Conneaut Lake Park
Tuesday, February 21, 2006

Three long-closed rides will return this year at historic and financially troubled Conneaut Lake Park.

The three rides -- the Tempest, the Tumblebug and the park train -- are scheduled to return when the park opens on Memorial Day for the 2006 season, manager George Deshner said.

Park officials said they plan to update the public about the park's finances and plans at a meeting tonight.

The Tempest, a ride that circles and spins, has been missing from the amusement park in northwestern Pennsylvania for four years. The park did not have enough money to get it back after it was repaired in Paducah, Ky.

A fund-raiser last summer helped raise enough to pay for the repairs and have the ride returned to the park, Deshner said.

The park also has raised enough money to fix the Tumblebug, which has been shut down for several years. The park train, out of service for two years, also will return this year, though the park needs to raise more money for that, he said.

Conneaut Lake Park has been under court-ordered supervision since 1998 stemming from debts and lawsuits related to its previous owner. The lawsuits were resolved, but the park still has debts nearing $2.9 million.

The park, which opened in 1892, is the 12th oldest in the nation. This year, Preservation Pennsylvania added the park to its list of endangered historic places, meaning the group believes the park is in imminent danger of closing or being sold for development.
