The 2006 Schedule: Local high school musicals pop up like spring flowers
Monday, February 20, 2006

Alyssa Cwanger, Post-Gazette
Last year, Baldwin High School put on "The Pajama Game" for its spring musical. More than 100 Western Pennsylvania high schools are preparing their annual productions.

One of the distinctive seasonal rituals of Western Pennsylvania is the springtime flowering of high school musicals. And once again, the Post-Gazette has gathered as many as possible for our annual list. So far, we have 103, compared with the 99 we ended up with last year, counting late additions.

The best use of this list is as a spur to see more musicals than just the one in your community. To help, we list schools in chronological order of first performance, grouped by weeks, but note that some schools run two weeks or more. For specific days and times of performance, contact the schools. Some have free senior citizens' previews.

Send any additions or corrections to crawson@post-gazette.com and we will keep the list up-to-date on our high school musicals Web page. Click here to go to the main theater page or go directly to the H.S. Musicals page by clicking here. On that page you will soon find links to the PG's accumulating high school musicals coverage, which will eventually include weekly previews in the suburban editions, a half-dozen or more full-scale reviews (some with professional photo journals) and reviews by students in the Kelly Critics portion of Pittsburgh CLO's Gene Kelly Awards.

The Kelly Awards are one of the three big regional showcases. The schools participating in these are marked on the following list as follows:

10th Westmoreland Night of the Stars (Westmoreland County), Palace Theatre, Greensburg, 6:45 p.m. May 3; 13 schools marked +

12th Henry Mancini Awards (Butler, Lawrence and Beaver counties), Methany Fieldhouse, Geneva College, Beaver Falls, 7 p.m., May 24; 15 schools (includes Lincoln, already completed) marked #

Correction/Clarification: (Published Feb. 21, 2006) In this list of high school musicals in Feb. 20, 2006 editions, an incorrect title was listed for Thomas Jefferson High School. On March 9-11, it will stage "Footloose," not "Fiddler on the Roof."
