Steelers' newest Lombardi trophy to get a place of its own
Thursday, February 09, 2006

It did not take long for Dan Rooney to find a spot for the newest Vince Lombardi Trophy.

The Vince Lombardi trophy for Super Bowl XL sits on a desk opposite the other four trophies at the Steelers' South Side facility.
First, he set it on top of the plexiglass case that houses the Steelers' first four trophies from their Super Bowl victories. He did not like the look. He had someone push the case full of trophies back a little from the glass wall that encloses the Art Rooney Sr. Library at their offices.

Then, Rooney placed the new trophy on top of his dad's old desk and had a light moved so it could shine on the glistening silver Tiffany prize, there for everyone to see as they walk through the entrance to the Steelers' executive offices at the UPMC complex on the South Side.

"We looked at it, we moved the others back, it was a significant spot -- we put it on my father's desk," Rooney said yesterday. "You can see the others, so history is there, but this is the new."

It's a temporary home for the new trophy, but it will stay separate from the four won in six years in the 1970s. A case will be built to house the 2006 Lombardi Trophy, and it will stand by itself somewhere in the Chief's library. That follows Rooney's feeling and that of his son, team president Art Rooney II, that while "one for the thumb" was a nice catchphrase, this Super Bowl triumph belongs in a place of its own.

One possible problem remains: how to fit the names of everyone in the organization on the trophy, not just the players and coaches.

"We want to put everybody's on it," Rooney said. "The first time, it was just the players. The second time, we put more. The fourth time, we put everyone on it."

That wasn't so difficult back in 1980, but the Steelers employ many more people than they did 26 years ago.

"The staff, players, coaches, everything is bigger now," Rooney said.

That's one problem, though, he loves to have.
