On the group's Web site, mrdevious.com, the origins of the song are traced to a sports announcer butchering the name of safety Troy Polamalu during a broadcast of the Steelers game against the Vikings in December.
The tune was popularized on the Muppet Show and has also been used as an advertising jingle. The Mr. Devious band gives away the song as a free download on myspace.com and flidop.com. The band says it has been downloaded more than 100,000 times. Because of popular demand the song is also available on CD. The locations of retail outlets where the discs may be purchased are listed at mrdevious.com.
Brandi Engel, a Duquesne University student from Mt. Lebanon, said she likes the song "because it's hilarious" and because Polamalu and the Muppets "are the greatest!"
Pittsburgh native Erik Valenta now lives in the heart of Cleveland Browns country in Kent, Ohio. He traveled to Detroit with his brother, Kurt, and three of their friends. He said he learned about the song in an e-mail, downloaded it and burned it onto a CD. "We've been living off that song, we listened to it the whole way up."
