The National Institutes of Health has awarded grants totaling about $4 million to a Children's Hospital researcher, Dr. Massimo Pietropaolo, to further develop tests that predict who is likely to develop Type 1 diabetes.
An earlier study of about 1,500 people by Dr. Pietropaolo and his colleagues showed that a combination of three blood tests enabled researchers to predict with 80 percent certainty who would develop diabetes. That research was published last month in the journal Pediatric Diabetes.
