Suzanne Gourley, the Apollo woman who is running a volunteer program to rescue pets marooned by Hurricane Katrina, is going to be keeping more than 80 dogs in her house a while longer.
Mrs. Gourley said her house, a licensed dog kennel, is now under a quarantine ordered by the Dog Law Enforcement Office in Harrisburg. The dogs now kept inside are still recovering from a variety of ailments and will not be ready for adoption soon.
Many of the animals are suffering from a contagious, vaccine-resistant strain of "kennel cough," she said. That means costly veterinary intervention and a severe cut in the number of prospective volunteer kennel helpers: Workers who have their own pets at home could take the germ home and spread the infection.
Still, the rescuer is positive that someday the dogs will have new homes. She made clear that most of the "Katrina dogs" are not spayed or neutered, and adoptive families must agree to have the job done within 30 days.
"Things like this are very important. I just want to set the record straight," Mrs. Gourley said in a story in PG East last week.
