UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- The Penguins have traded defenseman Dick Tarnstrom to Edmonton for defenseman Cory Cross and right winger Jani Rita.

Cross, 35, is 6 foot 5, 225 pounds, but does not play the physical style his vital statistics suggest. Rita, 24, is a good skater with a feisty style, but has had limited success in the NHL.

Cross has two goals and three assists in 34 games this season; Rita has three goals and no assists in 21.

Tarnstrom seemed to move onto the trading block when he took the Penguins to salary arbitration last summer. He did not dress for his final two games with the Penguins, and was a healthy scratch for four of his final nine.

He had five goals and five assists in 33 games this season.
