Zoning panel hears testimony on Walgreens proposed for East End
Friday, January 06, 2006

The Pittsburgh Zoning Board of Adjustment took testimony yesterday but did not rule on a request by Paradise Development Corp. for a special exception as part of plans to build a Walgreens drugstore at Braddock and Penn avenues in Park Place.

Zoning board members gave attorneys for the developer and the Greater Park Place Neighborhood Association until Jan. 17 to submit findings of fact and conclusions of law relating to the case.

Residents are upset over plans by Walgreens to demolish three homes to build a driveway to serve the store. The Walgreens would sit on commercially zoned land now occupied by a service station, but the driveway would be built in a residential zone.

Typically, driveways are permitted in residential districts; however, residents argue that the Walgreens driveway is an integral part of the commercial development and should not be allowed. The special exception is needed for a proposed pharmacy drive-through.
