Design judges named for West End pedestrian bridge

A seven-member panel of judges has been selected to review design proposals for a pedestrian bridge to be installed adjacent to the West End Bridge to link trails around the Downtown area.

The Riverlife Task Force and Alcoa Foundation are conducting the international design competition for the bridge across the Ohio River. The competition is funded by a $413,000 grant from the foundation.

Design proposals are due Friday and will be displayed publicly Feb. 7-9. The judges will choose three to five preliminary finalists by late February and finalists in April.

The judges are Carol Brown, president of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust; Kathleen M. Buechel, president and treasurer of the Alcoa Foundation; architect Winka Dubbeldam of Archi-Tectonics, New York City; urban designer and architect Alex Krieger of Chan Krieger Associates, Cambridge, Mass.; engineer Leslie Robertson of Leslie E. Robertson Associates, New York City; Ken Smith of Ken Smith Landscape Architect, New York City; and Bill Strickland, president and chief executive officer of the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild.
