Michael V. Fortino

A nationally known speaker from Pittsburgh faces child pornography charges in Arkansas after technicians there working on his malfunctioning laptop computer discovered sexually explicit images of children.

The technicians contacted police in Fayetteville, Ark., who began investigating Nov. 4. The probe led them to Michael V. Fortino, 45, who had been in Arkansas for a speaking engagement.

Mr. Fortino, who lives on Observatory Hill, was arrested last Wednesday on three counts of possession or viewing of sexually explicit material involving a child.

Police in Arkansas discovered more than 1,000 images on Mr. Fortino's hard drive, said Fayetteville police Sgt. Shannon Gabbard.

Police in Fayetteville, a city of about 60,000, and federal agents have traveled to Pittsburgh to search Mr. Fortino's North Side home. Sgt. Gabbard declined comment on what was found.

Mr. Fortino is considered an expert in the management and balance of time, stress and lifestyles. He is president and founder of The Center for Lifestyle Management with offices in Pittsburgh and San Francisco.

Under police questioning, he initially denied having visited illegal Web sites, saying his computer had been infected and the images popped onto his screen.

Police said he later admitted that he videotaped several young girls while they were changing their clothes on his boat, police said. He said that he viewed child pornography about twice a week and saved images of child pornography on his computer.

Mr. Fortino has appeared on various national news programs and "Good Morning America." His most recent assignment has been as host of the PBS special "The Leadership Series."
