The building blocks for an entertainment hub
Wednesday, December 07, 2005

Windows Media Center has special hardware requirements, which is why you can't add the software to your standard computer. Buy a PC with Windows Media Center Edition or one of several alternative software packages to turn a PC into an entertainment hub.

Required items:

A Media Center ready PC.

A TV with S-video, component or RCA input jacks.

Computer network (LAN). This is the backbone that pulls your PC, TV and programming guide together. Fast wired (100Mbps) is best. Fast wireless (802.11g) is OK most of the time. Slow wireless (802.11b) will make you wince.

Internet access. This is how your PC finds and updates the TV listings.

Anti-virus and spyware removal software. Sorry, you still can't live without these.

Entertaining programming/cable TV service, radio signals, DVDs, CDs and/or music files.

Optional items:

Media Center Extender. This lets you place your TV and PC in separate rooms. You need one for each remote TV.

Home theater sound. This enhances your experience. Don't have a home theater? Hook in your stereo.

Digital camera and camcorder. Your media center PC will allow you to view your photos and home videos on your TV, using your remote control.

Photo quality printer. Face it; nobody wants to view photos strictly on screen.

Voice Control. Tell your PC what to play or record, instead of picking up a remote control.

Portable music player (such as an iPod)

A comfy couch and nearby kitchen -- are these really optional?
