Friday, November 25, 2005

The high school athletes of the week, as selected by the Post-Gazette scholastic sports staff.

Meghan Klingenberg

SCHOOL: Pine-Richland

WHO IS SHE? A standout junior on the Pine-Richland girls' soccer team that won the PIAA Class AAA championship.

LAST WEEK: Klingenberg got the assist on the only goal as Pine-Richland beat Owen J. Roberts, 1-0, in the title game Saturday. The goal was scored by Jordan Baranowski. Owen J. Roberts was ranked No. 1 in the country and had not given up a goal in its previous 20 games.

SEASON: Klingenberg had six assists in the postseason and had 10 goals and 10 assists for the year. "I know that doesn't sound like a lot, but we play a lot of the top teams in Triple-A," said Pine-Richland coach Jodi Chmielewski. "The majority of teams in Triple-A don't have big goal-scorers."

AMONG THE BEST: It wouldn't be an overstatement to call Klingenberg one of the top juniors in the eastern part of the country. She is a member of the U.S. under-17 national team and will play with the team in Brazil next month. She also has been to Ireland and California with the team.

COMING UP BIG: Klingenberg stands only 5 feet 2. "She plays a lot bigger than she is," Chmielewski said. "She's very quick and very strong for her size."

THE FUTURE: Division I schools already are showing an interest in Klingenberg.

Brandon Detwiler

SCHOOL: South Park

WHO IS HE? A senior receiver on the WPIAL Class AA champion South Park football team.

LAST WEEK: Detwiler caught five passes for 161 yards and scored one touchdown as South Park beat Greensburg Central Catholic, 24-21, in the title game.

SEASON: Detwiler has caught 32 passes and scored 19 touchdowns.

CAREER: He has caught 66 passes over the past two seasons.

BIG-PLAY BRANDON: Detwiler has 996 yards receiving this year and a 31.1 yards-per-catch average.

"He obviously can catch very well," said South Park coach Tom Loughran. "But he's one of those kids who does a great job taking the catch and usually converting it into a run. When you average in the high teens or 20 for yards per catch, that's doing a really fantastic job. I know we've never had anybody here averaging 30 per catch."

THE OTHER SPORT: Detwiler is a member of the South Park basketball team.

THE FUTURE: Detwiler is not getting much interest from colleges. He is only 5 feet 11, 155 pounds. "I'm not telling college coaches how to do their jobs, but all of them kind of shy away from kids if they don't have the prototypical size," Loughran said. "I don't know how big you have to be if you're just a good player."
