After years of operating an office across from the Allegheny County Airport in West Mifflin, the Federal Aviation Administration has landed in Brentwood.
On Monday, the FAA moved its flight standards district office from the West Mifflin borough building to Brentwood Town Square.
Jim Peters, FAA spokesman, said the office, which employees 23 people, licenses pilots and inspects airports in Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia.
"There is no requirement that this type of office be next to an airport," Mr. Peters said. "In Brentwood, we will be within four miles of the [Allegheny County] airport."
He said the Brentwood location will be convenient for inspectors who often have to hop on a freeway to get to a regional airport.
An added incentive in the deal was that the landlord at Brentwood Town Square "picked up our moving expenses and is buying us new furniture," Mr. Peters said. Those perks come with a caveat that requires the FAA to remain in the new shopping district for five years.
Mr. Peters said the FAA hopes to settle into the new 7,500-square-foot space for the longterm.
"We have been at our present location for 12 years," Mr. Peters said last week.
The office's move leaves West Mifflin with about 7,300-square feet of vacant space in its borough building at 3000 Lebanon Church Road.
The new FAA address is 101 Town Square Way, Suite 201, Brentwood. The new phone number is 412-886-2580.
