Releasing a Hollywood movie for the holidays, one with a wide appeal for kids and adults, means the film itself is just the crown in a far-reaching empire of merchandise and tie-ins. Take "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire": It may be the darkest of the four films in the series, but dark times certainly don't lie ahead for retailers, who have countless "Goblet"-related items ready and waiting. Here's a small sample of what one movie can conjure:

Calendars: Take your pick. Andrews McMeel Publishing offers a range of HP time-keepers, including a literary 2006 wall calendar with artwork by Mary GrandPre, illustrator of the U.S. editions of the books. Mini-calendars and desk calendars are available, too.

Wristwatches: Seiko's "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" is designed to represent the story of the Hogwarts students in their fourth year and the Triwizard Tournament. Prices range from $20-$150 (the one pictured here is $40), including special-edition timepieces in collectible tins.

Music: Soundtrack

"Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire: Original Soundtrack," released this week, features the score by Academy Award-nominated composer Patrick Doyle and three songs written by rocker Jarvis Crocker, and performed by Crocker, Jonny Greenwood, Phil Selway, Steve Claydon and Jason Buckle (all seen in the film, too). Suggested price, $18.98.

Think you're a Harry Potter smarty-pants? Test your knowledge with Mattel's Scene It?(R) Harry Potter DVD Game ($39.99). Designed for players ages 8 to adult, it has hundreds of images and movie clips and 1,000-plus questions from the four films. Mattel's many products also include action figures, dolls, playsets and other games. With Lego playsets, youngsters (or adults) can re-create key scenes from the movie, including a graveyard duel in which Harry sees the face of evil. For video gamers, it's all systems go with "Goblet of Fire" games by Electronic Arts harrypotter.ea.com/) for Windows XP ($28.99); PlayStation2, Xbox, Game Cube or Sony PSP ($39.99 each); GameBoy Advance ($29.99); and Nintendo DS ($34.88).

Clothing: T-shirts and trinkets

The burgundy-and-yellow Harry Potter Chenille Scarf, with or without Gryffindor patch ($34.95), is a WBShop.com exclusive. At Hot Topic stores or www.hottopic.com, you'll find four dozen-plus items, ranging from a $10.99 black Death Eaters Wrist Cuff to a $19 Ron Weasley Yule Ball T-shirt. The mall-based chain also sells pins, key chains, postcards and other items.

Collectibles

If money is no object, you can buy a limited-edition, 8-inch tall pewter replica based on the goblet in the movie. It's available from WBShop.com for just $125. That site has pages of bedding, posters, prints, novelty items and other gifts.

Jewelry

Look as lovely as Hermione at the Yule Ball with earrings from the Noble Collection (www.noblecollection.com). Designed to be similar to the ones worn by the student witch for her transformation from bookworm to glam girl in the film, the $59 earrings are flowers made of sterling silver and set with pink crystals.
