Reality TV: So Long to 'Laguna Beach'
Thursday, November 17, 2005

Say it isn't so! The summer draws to a close on "Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County," and the seniors must say goodbye. The boys surf a few final waves together, and the girls tearfully reminisce about the year's drama.

"I had the best year of my life," college-bound Kristin says. LC drives off into the sunset in her convertible to Los Angeles, and a new MTV series, "The Hills," will follow her there. (It will premiere in the spring.) Season three of "Laguna Beach" will feature LC's little sis and some new characters, but seems to stick with the familiar themes: drama, hardbody surfer boys and catty, cute girls. Perfect. "Laguna Beach 3" will premiere next summer.

On "The Biggest Loser," the final five learn there's no immunity up for grabs, but the winner of the pole challenge is allowed to add 2 pounds to another competitor's weight loss for the week. Andrea wins the challenge, and gives the 2 pounds to Dr. Jeff. At the weigh-in, Matt's gamble of gaining weight the previous week pays off, as he finds out he's lost 26 pounds in one week, a 9.77 percent loss! Andrea and Dr. Jeff are in the bottom two, and Dr. Jeff is voted out.

Matt gives a tearful speech when he votes for Dr. Jeff, calling him a hero for saying he's losing weight to inspire his patients. Dr. Jeff, the first Loser to break 100 pounds on the series, calls himself the "luckiest man in the world." He lost an incredible 103 pounds on the show, plus 27 more when he returned home, going from 370 pounds to 240 pounds. Four are left, and I'm still pulling for sweetie pie Suzy and wrestler Jeff. "Loser" airs Tuesday night on NBC.

Crybabies of the Week ... are, of course, the girls of "Laguna Beach." The season finale is a total sobfest for the ladies, especially Kristin. "I've been so emotional this past month," she admits. Her goodbyes with ex Stephen, and Alex H. and Jessica are particularly tearful. Oh, go on and tell me you didn't cry, too, when the girls shared a final hug.

Channel surfing: The girls head to The Hamptons with Atoosa on "Miss Seventeen." The Seventeen magazine editor in chief asks the remaining six girls questions to find out who's honest, and who's just being phony to get further in the competition.

The girls sell Julie out, calling her sneaky and fake, but Julie opens up to the others and this week, no one is off The List. MTV's "Miss Seventeen" airs Monday night on MTV.

Judd wins the Reward Challenge on "Survivor: Guatemala," and earns a steak and lobster dinner, and a clue hinting to the whereabouts of the hidden immunity idol. He shares the clue with pal Stephenie, but lies about its contents to the others. Jamie tries to redeem himself at the Reward Challenge by taking the worst meal. He later wins the Immunity Challenge. At Tribal Council, Gary admits he's found the hidden immunity idol, so he's safe, too. Bobby Jon is voted out with 5 votes, over Stephenie's 2 and Cindy's 1. Bobby Jon is the first member of the Jury. "Survivor" airs tonight on CBS.

On "The Apprentice," the groups team up with Best Buy to create an in-store interactive display for the "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" movie and "Star Wars: Battlefront II" video game. Bitter Clay is named Project Manager of Capital Edge, but Alla takes charge of the team and leads it to victory. Capital Edge doesn't vote to give Clay an exemption in the next task. Brian heads up Excel and the team misses its meeting with the Best Buy executives. They fail to give Darth Vader a prominent place in the display, and Marshawn gives up control of the presentation to Rebecca. In the boardroom, Donald Trump ends up firing Brian and Marshawn for their bad moves. It's down to the final six -- I'm rooting for ruthless Alla and level-headed Randal. "The Apprentice" airs tonight on NBC.

After the second week of competition on VH1's celebreality gem "But Can They Sing?" Carmine Gotti Agnello leads the pack of D-listers with the most votes. I assume his legions of fans are voting for his finesse with hair gel, not his atrocious singing skills. This week, he sings Usher's "U Remind Me" and celebrity judge, Ant, says he "sounded like cat caught in a muffler." Boxer Larry Holmes received the fewest votes last week and is voted out. Who will go next? I think Bai Ling's singing days are numbered after her awful rendition of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." "But Can They Sing?" airs Sunday night.
