Laura Sauereisen's son, Clark, doesn't have much of an interest in his ABCs.
But the 4-year-old has no problem when it comes to naming Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Jackson and Franklin.
It was that presidential knowledge that helped Clark make his national television debut on a segment of "America's Funniest Home Videos."
"It was nice just as a mom [to see him] get a little hoorah," said Mrs. Sauereisen, of O'Hara.
Clark's segment on the show was broadcast Sunday.
He is shown looking at pictures in a coffee-table book on U.S. presidents and proudly reciting all 43 names as he leafs through the pages. When he comes to the end of the book, he adds a dramatic finish for the camera by ripping out the last page.
Clark's 7-year-old sister, Grace, begins to scold him, and Clark's look of triumph comically dissolves into tears as he asks for forgiveness.
Mrs. Sauereisen wanted to record Clark reciting the presidents just to have his accomplishment on tape. But when he threw in the surprise ending, she decided to send the video to "America's Funniest Home Videos."
She was a bit hesitant, though, concerned that the fame and attention might be too much for her son.
"People had to beg me to send it in," she said.
She's glad she did.
The video won a featured stand-alone segment on the show, meaning it was played separately from the typical reel of several humorous videos shown one after the other.
Mrs. Sauereisen said a Presidents Day celebration at Clark's school initially spurred his interest in learning about the presidents. He began asking about the names of the presidents whose pictures are on money.
"I never knew any of them, but I sure do now," Mrs. Sauereisen said with a laugh.
The preschooler had borrowed the book shown in the video from the Laurie Ann West Memorial Library in O'Hara.
"I hated to have to turn that book in," Mrs. Sauereisen said. "It was such a part of us."
The library didn't mind that Mrs. Sauereisen had to tape the last page of the book. In fact, the library had a surprise for Clark.
Sue Herald, one of the librarians at Laurie Ann West, called Mrs. Sauereisen and offered to give Clark the book after hearing he was going to be featured on "America's Funniest Videos."
"Little did she know I had been searching for [a copy of] that book ... it was so sweet," Mrs. Sauereisen said.
She said Clark has become a celebrity at his preschool, Good Shepherd Preschool in Fox Chapel.
Before Sunday's show, "They put a sign on the door that said 'Watch our star' on it," she said.
And, apparently his star quality is contagious.
"My little one [20-month-old Clayton] is already walking around saying, 'George Bush, George Bush' because of Clark."
