Jim Colborn and Jim Lett have been named to Pirates Manager Jim Tracy's coaching staff, General Manager Dave Littlefield announced today.
Colborn will serve as pitching coach while Lett has been appointed bench coach, the same positions both had when Tracy was manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers last season.
The 59-year-old Colborn spent the last five seasons as Tracy's pitching coach in Los Angeles. Under his guidance, the Dodgers' pitching staff ranked among the top four in ERA among National League clubs in three of the last four seasons, including a Major League best 3.16 mark and 17 shutouts in 2003.
Colborn spent 10 years as a pitcher in the major leagues, where he compiled a career record of 83-88, 60 complete games and a 3.80 ERA (1597.1ip/675er) with the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, Kansas City Royals and Seattle Mariners. A 20-game winner and an All-Star with Milwaukee in 1973, Colborn set a Brewers' club record by pitching 314.1 innings that season. He also threw a no-hitter against Texas while pitching with the Royals in 1977, facing just one batter over the minimum.
Lett, 54, spent the 2005 campaign serving as the Dodgers' bench coach following four years serving as Tracy's bullpen coach in Los Angeles.
The Charleston, W.Va. native has logged 32 years in the game of baseball as a player, coach, manager and front office executive, spending 23 of those years in the Cincinnati Reds organization.
After playing three years as an infielder in the minor leagues with Cincinnati (1973-75), Lett spent 10 seasons as a minor league manager in the Reds system, where he compiled a 646-667 record and guided his teams to a 1st or 2nd place finish six times. Prior to joining the Dodgers, he also spent time as a major league coach with Toronto (1997-1999) and Cincinnati (1986-1989, 1996).
