District Colleges Roundup: 3rd-string QB lifts Duquesne to victory
Rombach, Dukes deck Iona, 31-17

Duquesne, led by third-string quarterback Kevin Rombach, defeated host Iona, 31-17, yesterday to win its 36th consecutive game in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Scott Knapp, the regular starter, wasn't available because of an injury. His top backup, Ben Palumbo, had to leave the game because of an injury. Nevertheless, the Dukes (5-3, 3-0) rallied from a 10-0 deficit in the first quarter.

The Gaels (3-5, 1-2) handed the Dukes their previous league defeat, 62-50, in 1999.

Rombach, a freshman, completed 11 of 16 passes for 171 yards and an 8-yard touchdown to Dan Spriggs.

Stony Brook 38, Robert Morris 37: Josh Dudash completed 23 of 34 passes for 411 yards and five touchdowns as visiting Stony Brook (4-4, 3-2) beat the Colonials (2-6, 1-4) in the Northeast Conference. For Robert Morris, Drew Geyer completed 20 of 35 passes for 313 yards and five touchdowns, and Tyjuan Massey had five catches for 131 yards and four scores. The Colonials scored 31 points in the second quarter to lead, 31-14. Stony Brook led, 32-31, midway through the fourth quarter. Robert Morris regained the lead, 37-32, on Geyer's 74-yard touchdown pass to Devin Wilson with 7:14 left.

Sacred Heart 53, St. Francis 45: Anthony Doria (Seton-LaSalle) completed 33 of 61 passes for a school-record 494 yards and tied a school record with four touchdown passes as the Red Flash (2-6, 2-3) lost the NEC game. Michael Caputo (Bethel Park) had 14 catches for a school-record 294 yards and three touchdowns.

Edinboro 33, Kutztown 7: Justin Bouch passed for two touchdowns, and the Fighting Scots (7-2) scored on a blocked punt for the third consecutive game to keep alive their NCAA Division II playoff hopes. They are No. 7 in the Northeast Region, with the top six receiving bids to the playoffs.

Slippery Rock 58, Shippensburg 28: Josh Kniess carried 22 times for 172 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Rock (4-5) to its victory.

California 48, Lock Haven 7: Quarterback Joe Ruggiero completed 20 of 27 passes for 313 yards and five touchdowns for California (7-2, 4-1) against Lock Haven (2-8, 0-5).

IUP 30, Clarion 10: Chris Morgan rushed for 169 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries as IUP (5-4, 4-1) won at Clarion (3-6, 1-4).

Washington & Jefferson 35, Waynesburg 24: R.J. Zitzelsberger rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns, and Chris Edwards passed for 200 yards and a touchdown as visiting W&J (8-1), ranked 17th in Division III, downed the Yellow Jackets (3-5).

Carnegie Mellon 23, Case Western Reserve 20: Nathaniel Greenstein's 41-yard field goal as time expired lifted the host Tartans (4-4) to a win against Case Western (3-5). Travis Sivek, who rushed for 196 yards on 31 carries, scored on 4-yard run to make it 20-20 with 1:27 remaining.

Geneva 42, Taylor 0: Justin Sciarro passed for 251 yards and four touchdowns to lead visiting Geneva (6-3) to a win against Taylor (0-8).

Frostburg 16, Westminster 13: Mark Sedlock made a 41-yard field goal with 10 seconds to play to give Frostburg (5-3) the win at Westminster (3-5).
