Close race for top three in radio
Friday, October 21, 2005

The 2005 summer Arbitron ratings look like a near-mirror image of the Summer '04 ratings, with a few notable exceptions:

While KDKA-AM, WDVE-FM and WDSY-FM maintained the top three spots among total listeners, the gap between each narrowed, with all three showing an 8-plus average quarter-hour share.

WDVE was No. 1 in cume ratings this time around, as it has been a few times in recent books. WZPT-FM showed gains at eighth place in the most recent spring book, up from 11th a year ago.

In morning drive, WDSY moved up the ladder to third place from seventh a year ago; in cume ratings, it was No. 2. Howard Stern (heard on WRKZ-FM) dropped to sixth place, compared to third last year.

Among 25- to 54-year-olds, the top 10 stations were: WDVE, WDSY, WPGB-FM, WWSW-FM, WZPT, WSHH-FM, WKST-FM and WRRK-FM, with KDKA and WRKZ tied at ninth place. Among that age group, the top five morning shows were WDVE, WDSY, WPGB, WRKZ and WWSW.
