Subaru: Legacy shifts into the performance lane
Wednesday, October 12, 2005

Collectors will want to grab one of just 500 special edition 2006 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT spec.B sedans, a high performance version of Subaru's popular all-wheel drive intermediate model.

What makes this car special is a 250 horsepower intercooled turbocharged engine, along with exclusive suspension treatments and unique design elements and interior features. It's been offered only in Japan and Europe in the past, but Subaru, whose image is getting sportier quickly, decided to offer in the United States, too.

It's painted an exclusive Titanium Silver Metallic exterior color and has aerodynamic side ground-effects moldings with chrome trims. It has 18-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels and low profile performance tires, brick red leather interior, and comes only with a five-speed manual transmission.

Subaru has revamped the Impreza lineup with new headlights and taillights, and a new three-section grille.
This model year, the other Legacy models get such features as a standard four speed "Sportshift" automatic in the 2.5i Limited, a new navigation system on some models, and new 2.5i Special Edition sedan and wagon models which feature a standard eight-way power driver's seat and power moon roof at a value price.

The Legacy, which was new in 2005, has been transformed into an elegant, sporty sedan with sparkling handling. I was surprised at just how aggressively it corners now, and acceleration with the turbo is instantaneous.

Altogether, it feels much more European behind the wheel. The only problem I had was the car often accelerated strongly, sometimes unpredictably, because of the turbo. Other than that, the Legacy is a real treat.

Legacy models range in price from $21,695 for a manual transmission equipped Legacy 2.5i sedan, to $31, 995 for a top-line automatic transmission Legacy 2.5 GT Limited sedan with navigation. Fuel mileage runs around 23/30 mpg.

Subaru has added two new Outback models to its rugged line of all-wheel drive models. There's a third six-cylinder wagon model called the Outback 3.0R, which has an five speed automatic "Sportshift" transmission, tire pressure monitoring system, dual zone automatic climate control system, leather-trimmed steering wheel and six disc CD changer.

In addition, the Outback 3.0R L.L. Bean Edition Sedan replaces the Outback 3.0R Sedan. In both the Legacy and Outback lines, a 250 horsepower turbocharged and intercooled engine is now available only in the 2.5 GT and 2.5 XT Limited models.

Prices for the Outback models range from $24,795 for the 2.5i wagon with a manual transmission, to the $35,695 Outback 3.0R VDC Limited Wagon with navigation.

The Impreza lineup has also been heavily revised with new headlights and taillights, and a new "signature" three-section grille which is supposed to reflect the company's aircraft heritage. Headlights have smoke-tinted lenses.

In addition, there are now five versions of the high performance WRX sedan models, including a new lower priced WRX TR sedan and a premium level WRX Limited Sedan and WRX Limited Sport Wagon. A new engine is also bowing this model year, a 230 horsepower 2.5 liter intercooled "Boxer" four. Pricing information for the Impreza line is not yet available.

The Forester line also has been heavily revised. 2006 models will have new front ends and grilles, new taillights, a body color trim panel, and a new under bumper trim panel. All but the 2.5X get new larger body color side mirrors with integrated turn signals and body color door handles.

All Foresters are equipped with either with a 2.5 liter engine that produces 173 horsepower or a turbocharged/intercooled 2.5 liter which produces 230 horsepower. Prices range from $21,795 for a manual transmission engine equipped 2.5 X model, to $28,695 for the 2.5 XT Limited with a four speed electronic automatic transmission.
