Associations/Organizations

Kenneth J. Horoho Jr., partner, Goldberg Gruener Gentile Horoho & Avalli, has been serving as president-elect of the Pennsylvania Bar Association since May. He will become president in June 2006.

The National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining elected John B. Byrd III president of AMT -- The Association For Manufacturing Technology, to the center's board of directors.

The National Association for Business Economics elected Stuart G. Hoffman, senior vice president and chief economist for PNC Financial Services Group, president for 2005-2006.

Melissa K. Parkes, occupational therapist, The Early Learning Institute, was elected treasurer of the Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association.

Banking, Finance

Mellon Financial Corp. promoted Kevin L. Shearan to chief information officer.

Design

Bradley Brown Design Group hired Kim Kane, director of business development, Evan Dean, business development specialist, and Daniel Frattaroli, graphic designer.

Education

The Westmoreland County Community College board of trustees appointed Dr. Steven C. Ender president of the college.

The Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU) promoted Kathy Lust to fiscal specialist and Roseanne Johnston to director of technology services.

Winchester Thurston School appointed Maura Farrell director of Institutional Advancement; John Charney, director of the City Campus Lower School; Holly Hatcher-Frazier, director of Middle School. In addition, Michael Bernstein and Ronald Bartlett were elected to the school's board of trustees. Bernstein is the chief executive officer of Leedsworld Inc. and Bartlett is president of Bartlett Products LLC.

Engineering

Lennon, Smith, Souleret Engineering Inc. named Ned Mitrovich and Jason E. Stanton associates and shareholders.

Government

Alexander J. Graziani, executive director of the Smart Growth Partnership of Westmoreland County, was appointed vice chairman of the State Planning Board by Gov. Ed Rendell.

Law

Julian E. Neiser joined the Pittsburgh office of McGuireWoods as an associate in the firm's commercial litigation department. He will focus his practice on business disputes, construction lawand insurance coverage.

Pietragallo Bosick & Gordon announced that Rochelle L. Brightwell was named partner. She is a member of the litigation defense and commercial litigation practice groups.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette hired Randall S. Brant as director of advertising.

Nonprofit

Lutheran Affiliated Services elected Mark O'Donnell director of system development and communication.

Awards

Don Moyer of Agnew Moyer Smith will continue to publish the Panel Discussion on the final page of each issue of the Harvard Business Review for at least one more year. Moyer, originator of the column, has designed and authored the series since February 2004. Each Panel Discussion examines a business issue and includes a visual illustration of the topic.

Mike McCready and Cynthia Johnston, owners of Sir Speedy, 226 RIDC Park West Drive, were presented with the Century Club award at the Sir Speedy International Convention in Tampa, Fla. This annual award recognizes Sir Speedy's top 100 centers by sales, placing the Pittsburgh Sir Speedy in the franchise network's top 20 percent worldwide.

Steelcoast Creative, a Pittsburgh-based graphic design and motion graphics firm, has been awarded a 2005 American Graphic Design Award for its design of the Corporate Identity Program for the International Science Film Festival.

Making a Difference/Doing Good

Todd Bucci of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. presented a $5,000 check to the Pittsburgh Airport Area Chamber of Commerce's Enterprise Foundation as part of Wal-Mart's Civic Support Group Grant. This grant money will support the PAACC's Center for Business Education, Training and Incubation together with Women in Business Initiatives Incubator Project.

Business Notes

Knopp NeuroSciences Inc. has secured an exclusive license from the University of Pittsburgh to commercialize a panel of protein biomarkers as a diagnostic test for the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The markers were discovered by Robert Bowser, Ph.D., associate professor of neuropathology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and director of the ALS Tissue Bank. Bowser is a co-founder and paid consultant of Knopp NeuroSciences.

New Business/ New Offices

PDG Environmental Inc. said it has opened offices in Bakersfield, Calif., and Las Vegas, bringing the total number of PDGE offices nationwide to 16.

Contracts

Elias/Savion Advertising was named agency of record for CombineNet. Elias/Savion will design a marketing strategy that encompasses public and media relations, creative design, advertising and e-business strategy.

Wabtec Corp. has renewed its license agreements with two Japanese companies for five years. The renewals also marked the 80th anniversary of the agreements with NABTESCO and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (MELCO). Using technology licensed from Wabtec, NABTESCO and MELCO are the sole suppliers of braking equipment in the Japanese railway market. In addition, they supply railway braking equipment in China, Taiwan, the Republic of Korea and most Asian markets.

Elisco Advertising has begun working on projects with Tennessee-based Wellmont Health System. For Wellmont Health System, Elisco is developing billboard and TV campaigns.

The Pennsylvania Department of General Services awarded Astorino a $10 million contract for the construction of a Restricted Housing Unit and Medical Step-Down Unit for the Laurel Highlands State Correctional Institution in Somerset County. The goal of this project is to provide a segregated modular housing unit and relieve overcrowding by moving problem inmates to secure bed space and to provide long term care for the state's aging inmate population. Astorino has joined with HDR Architecture Inc. to provide physical and electronic security system design and D. W. LaSota Engineering Inc. will provide civil engineering services on the project.

AT&T won a $1.2 million contract from Dick's Sporting Goods Inc., to provide an Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network that will integrate all retail stores, corporate offices and distribution centers across the United States. By terms of the one-year agreement, AT&T will upgrade services supporting 239 locations. Dick's also will utilize the AT&T Business Direct portal, which will give the company around-the-clock online access to real-time reports on network performance and electronic billing.

Dividends

Parkvale Financial Corp. declared a regular quarterly cash dividend of 20 cents per share, payable Oct. 26 to stockholders of record Sept. 30.

Allegheny Technologies Inc. declared a quarterly dividend of 6 cents per share on the common stock, payable Sept. 27 to stockholders of record Sept. 19.

Alcoa declared a quarterly common stock dividend of 15 cents per share, payable Nov. 25 to shareholders of record Nov. 2.
