The Hill House Association and Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh will expand Mission Discovery, an award-winning after-school program that brings real-world science and technology to Hill District middle school students, thanks to a $400,000 grant from the Grable Foundation and $175,000 from the DSF Foundation.
Mission Discovery was created three years ago by the Carnegie Science Center and the Hill House to boost low science and math scores among students in Pittsburgh Public Schools.
The additional funding will allow the program to continue and to offer a new science and arts curriculum for students in kindergarten to 12th grade.
The program will enroll 30 children, who must be Hill District residents or attend school in the Hill. Tuition is $15 a month per child, and parents or caregivers must volunteer at least four hours every month to the program.
