NFL Notebook: Titans stir a little 'Sweetener' into lineup
Monday, October 03, 2005

Running back Jarrett Payton, son of the late Walter Payton, finally played in his first NFL game yesterday when the Tennessee Titans promoted him from the practice squad.

The Titans needed Payton, who went undrafted out of Miami in 2004, to fill the slot left by the four-game suspension of Travis Henry for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. He didn't get into the 31-10 loss to Indianapolis yesterday until the end, but he finished with four carries for 37 yards.

Colts

Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison tied Steve Young and Jerry Rice for the NFL record of most touchdown passes between a quarterback and a receiver with their 85th connection. The only question left now for the Indianapolis duo is what the final records will be when they quit playing.

Young and Rice combined for 85 touchdown passes between 1987 and 1999 with San Francisco.

Manning is in his eighth season with the Colts and has six years left on his $98 million contract. Harrison is in his 10th and signed a seven-year deal in December. Last week, they passed Buffalo's Jim Kelly and Andre Reed for most yards passing.

Manning also tied Ron Jaworski with his 116th consecutive start, which ranks second among quarterbacks behind Green Bay's Brett Favre.

Chiefs

Kansas City's Dante Hall tied an NFL record with his sixth career kickoff return for a touchdown, a 96-yarder in the second quarter of a 37-31 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. It was the 10th return (including punts) of Hall's career, his first since a 97-yard kickoff return against Denver Dec. 19, 2004. He returned kicks for scores in four consecutive games, an NFL record, in 2003.

Hall shares the kickoff return record with Ollie Matson, Gale Sayers, Travis Williams and Mel Gray. Hall is third on the career list for total returns for touchdowns, behind Brian Mitchell (13) and Eric Metcalf (12).

Falcons

Quarterback Michael Vick was knocked out of the game against the Minnesota Vikings with a sprained right knee ligament. Vick was hurt midway through the second quarter when he rolled right to throw and got hit hard by Minnesota's Erasmus James just after delivering an incomplete pass. Vick watched the second half from the sideline in his uniform.

Rams

Starting tight end Roland Williams has a dislocated right knee and likely will miss the rest of the season, coach Mike Martz said. Williams was injured with 7:02 remaining in the first quarter when he was tackled by Giants cornerback Curtis Deloatch after a 2-yard pass from Marc Bulger. He was taken off the field in a cart.

Bengals

Cincinnati lost both centers to knee injuries in the first half, forcing guard Eric Steinbach to take off his gloves and play the position. Rich Braham, the Bengals' 12th-year veteran, and backup center Larry Moore each had their right knees injured.

Saints

Tens of thousands of gold pompoms were distributed to the 58,688 fans at the Alamodome in San Antonio gates for New Orleans' home game against Buffalo. Fans used to cheering the NBA champions San Antonio Spurs did the wave and chanted "Dee-Fense" during a 19-7 victory for the Saints, who were displaced from New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina.

Broncos

Cornerback Champ Bailey's streak of 99 consecutive starts ended when he was inactive with a hamstring injury at Jacksonville.
