Some people go to great lengths to help their fellow man. Ken and Lynn Cutway, two teachers from Hempfield, are going to Turkmenistan for two years.
The Peace Corps announced Monday the Cutways have accepted Peace Corps assignments in Turkmenistan, a country spanning the northern borders of Afghanistan and Iran.
Ken Cutway will work as an English teacher and develop English education programs. Lynn Cutway will work with Turkmenistan nationals to develop community health programs for women and children.
The Cutways have masters degrees in education; Mrs. Cutway graduated from West Virginia University in 1969 with a physical education degree. Mr. Cutway earned his degree from the University of Iowa in art and art education in 1975.
"I went to college in the '60s when President Kennedy started the Peace Corps program," Lynn Cutway said. "After 40 years, I now have the time and energy to fulfill a 40-year-old dream."
Her husband said volunteering is "a second chance to do something I thought about doing in the '60s."
Before Peace Corps, the Cutways worked for the Hempfield Area school district.
President George W. Bush recently proposed doubling the size of the Peace Corps, and has underscored the importance of volunteerism by challenging all Americans to serve at least two years of their lives in their own community or overseas.
