Friday, September 23, 2005

At its quarterly meeting Monday and Tuesday in Harrisburg, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is expected to vote to change 13.5 miles of the Clarion River and 8.5 miles of the Little Juniata from All Tackle Trophy Trout to the new All Tackle Catch and Release, and to approve a requirement that fishing guides and charter captains be licensed, annually.

Catch of the Week

Rich Mosko of Kennerdell landed a 47 1/2 inch, 30-pound muskie in the Allegheny River.

Weekly report

Erie: Perch action has been good in 55 to 62 feet of water north of Walnut Creek and off of Trout Run. A blow-out in the lake with 6-foot waves shut down fishing earlier this week. Until then, walleye angling was decent in 65 to 75 feet from Elk Creek east to Walnut. Anglers have been picking up steelhead off the mouths of the tributaries in the early morning and evening, and in the same areas as walleye. Trolling pressure near the mouths has been low. Lake temperatures have been hovering around 69 degrees and the tributaries are very low and clear.

Kinzua Reservoir (Warren County): Anglers are starting to pick up walleye up to 23 inches, bass and a few northern pike in the river below the dam.

Monongahela River: Mike Kirshenbaum, 15, of Squirrel Hill landed a 16-inch largemouth bass on a jig under a bobber at Riverfront Park on the South Side. Smallmouths, including many that are not legal, have been released. The Venture Outdoors' Downtown TriAnglers landed a mixed bag off Point State Park Wednesday. John Dunn of the North Side caught a 17.25-inch channel catfish, Rege Fitzhenry of Hazelwood a 13-inch freshwater drum, Dave Boslett of Forest Hills a 18.25-inch smallmouth buffalo, Tom Lippert of Spring Gargen a 23-inch channel cat and John Brady of Verona a 22.75-inch carp and 19-inch channel cat.

Peters Creek (Allegheny County): The Tri County Anglers stocked this Monongahela River tributary with trout for a children's derby Sunday.

Allegheny River: Vaughn Ralston of Tionesta and Terry Miller of West Hickory won the recent Allegheny River Bass Buddy tournament near Oil City with a five-bass 12.13-pound total. Eric Heil of Oil City and Kevin Hesson of Polk boated the lunker -- a 3.35-pound smallmouth -- and finished second with 10.02 pounds. In all 73 smallmouths totaling 130.25 pounds were released. A large number of catfish are biting. A few walleye up to 28 inches are hitting creek chubs at Highland Park.

French Creek (Crawford County): Tom Eyler of Mt Lebanon caught a nice 25-inch flathead catfish that measured 18.5 inches around the gills Saturday.

Lake Arthur (Butler County): Anglers have been hammering crappie, with some limits being taken around brush piles in 8 to 10 feet on jigs and minnows. The fall hybrid striper bite is beginning, with 6- to 8-pounders being taken by boaters and waders in the early morning and early evening. Anglers report catching walleye trolling or running worm harnesses in the evening.

Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Crappie are being landed at the dock. Harry Beemiller Sandy Lake landed a couple of nice largemouths, 21 and 20 inches, trolling Shad Raps.

Cross Creek Lake (Washington County): Crappie up to 12 inches and bass up to 18 inches are hitting in about 10 feet.

Youghiogheny River (Fayette County): Good conditions continue, with anglers targeting trout from the Labor Day weekend stocking.

Glendale Lake (Cambria County): Crappies, 9 to 12 inches, and perch, 10 to 12 inches, are being caught. A 52-inch muskie was reportedly caught in the weed line at the lower end of Slate Lick Branch.
