On an evening when lightning and rain reigned, Lamont Smith provided his own pyrotechnics for Central Catholic.
Smith, the leading rusher in WPIAL Class AAAA at game time, scored four touchdowns last night to lead the Vikings to a 40-0 victory against Connellsville in Quad East Conference play at Duquesne University's Rooney Field.
Smith scored on runs of 1, 46 and 32 yards and on an 80-yard punt return. He finished with 171 yards on 12 carries, and has 744 yards rushing this season.
Central Catholic (3-1, 2-0) is No. 2 in the Post-Gazette's WPIAL rankings. It has won 15 of its past 16 games in the Quad East, including its past 11.
The Vikings gained 257 of their 283 yards on the ground and intercepted two passes by the Falcons (1-3, 0-2).

Indians quarterback Ryan Lehmeier used his legs and passing arm to spark an easy Quad North Conference victory on the road.
Lehmeier opened and closed the scoring with touchdown runs of 2 yards and 1 yard. He also completed 10 of 18 passes for 175 yards, including 7 to Brad Hill for 145 yards, to lift North Hills (3-1, 2-0), which is No. 5 in the WPIAL.
The Indians amassed 401 yards of offense, including 226 on the ground.
North Hills has won the past four and seven of the past eight in its series with the Raiders (1-3, 0-2). Since joining the Quad North in 1990, Seneca Valley is 5-11 against North Hills.
Penn Hills 40
Hempfield 0
Ricardo Clark, Chad Parker, Carlos Scott and Tom Airgood led the Indians in a Quad East Conference rout of visiting Hempfield. The game was called with 8:01 left in the fourth quarter and will not have to be resumed.
Clark carried 15 times for 137 yards and one touchdown, a 17-yarder in the third quarter. Parker completed only 5 of 14 passes, but they went for 143 yards and two scores.
Scott had two touchdowns, on a 31-yard pass and a 28-yard run. And Airgood scored on a 41-yard interception return and a 59-yard reception, as Penn Hills (4-0, 2-0) beat the Spartans (1-3, 0-2) by 30-plus points for the third time in four years.
Hempfield has lost its past nine conference games. Since joining in 2000, the Spartans are 2-30 in the Quad East, including 0-6 against Penn Hills.

Shawn Fraser rambled for three touchdowns, all in the pivotal second half, as the Highlanders left the ranks of the winless with a Quad East Conference triumph against the visiting Warriors.
Fraser carried 20 times for 141 yards and touchdowns of 20, 4 and 5 yards, as Baldwin (1-3, 1-1) rallied from a 14-6 halftime deficit. Nadeem Farah's 76-yard return after a fumble recovery put the Highlanders ahead for good, 20-17, in the third quarter.
Tyler Huether, the WPIAL passing leader at game time, completed 24 of 37 for 339 yards and one touchdown for Penn-Trafford (1-3, 0-2), which has lost three in a row. Huether has thrown for 1,234 yards this season.

Tied, 7-7, at halftime, the Wolverines showed why they are No. 1 in the WPIAL and No. 3 in the PIAA, as they hammered the host Knights over the final 24 minutes of their Quad East matchup.
Woodland Hills (4-0, 2-0) appeared to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Marcel Farrish's 85-yard run. It was nullified by a penalty, however, and the Wolverines had to punt.
The Knights (1-3, 1-1) returned it to the Woodland Hills 21, and Dan Kozak ran in from there for a 7-0 advantage.
Farrish, the No. 2 rusher in WPIAL Class AAAA at game time, tied it with an 11-yard run in the second quarter. He also scored on runs of 2 and 44 yards, and finished with 24 carries for 176. He has 580 yards this season.
Teammate Wes Lyons caught two touchdown passes from Vondre Griffin.
Darrin Walls, Woodland Hills' outstanding receiver/defensive back, left in the first half with a shoulder injury.
Woodland Hills quarterback Keith Howell was suspended for the game for disciplinary reasons. Tyron Morrison started and was replaced by Griffin.

The Gators went on the road to capture a Quad Southwest Conference triumph against the Cavaliers.
Gateway (3-1, 2-0), No. 4 in the WPIAL, extended its conference winning streak to 20 -- the past eight in the Quad Southwest, the previous 12 in the Quad South.
The Gators have dominated Kiski (1-3, 1-1) in recent times, winning four in a row and 10 of the past 11.

Nate Planavsky's 24-yard field goal with 13 seconds remaining enabled the visiting Foxes to end their 14-game losing streak, the longest in WPIAL Class AAAA.
Anthony Schulli carried 29 times for 158 yards and two touchdowns for Fox Chapel (1-3, 1-1). He scored on runs of 5 and 80 yards as the Foxes took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter of this Quad Southwest matchup.
Latrobe (3-1, 0-1) came back. Quarterback Anthony DeStefano scored on a 67-yard run in the first quarter, and Bill Aukerman ran 2 yards in the fourth to tie the game.
