A high school soccer player collapsed while standing on the sidelines during a game and died a short time later.
Classes were canceled for Friday at Portersville Christian School in Butler County, where Shawn Slater, 18, of Prospect, was a student.
Slater died Monday after playing in the double-overtime game against a team from the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in Pittsburgh. He was not in the game, which was still in progress, when he collapsed, said the Rev. Michael Charles, a Bible teacher at Portersville Christian.
Slater told others on the sideline that he felt faint before collapsing. A coach performed CPR until an ambulance arrived, and emergency personnel got his heart beating again before he was rushed to nearby UPMC Shadyside hospital, his mother, Alberta Slater said.
The teen died at the hospital after doctors were unable to sustain his erratic heartbeat, she said.
The Allegheny County Coroner's Office is not investigating the death, officials said.
Slater's funeral is set for Friday at Portersville Bible Church.
