Pitt Football Notebook: Wannstedt gives Jennings nod as starting tailback
Tuesday, August 30, 2005
Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt named Rashad Jennings the starting tailback yesterday for the Panthers' opener against Notre Dame Saturday at Heinz Field, but made it clear that competition for all jobs never ends. Wannstedt also unveiled the rest of the depth chart as part of his weekly news conference.

"In all of the scrimmages we have had, Rashad, he's been very consistent," Wannstedt said. "You have the depth there but that's of today. Don't hold me to it if there are some changes come Saturday. Things happen on a day-to-day basis."

Tim Murphy, who had competed with Jennings for the tailback position, will start at fullback, a position he has played in the past. Two other key decisions were at one defensive end spot, where Charles Sallet got the starting nod over Chris McKillop, and at weakside linebacker, where J.J. Horne and Brian Bennett are listed as co-starters.

The depth chart also listed Darrelle Revis as the punt returner and LaRod Stephens as the kickoff returner.

Scholarships awarded

Three walk-ons -- senior defensive tackle Ron Idoko, redshirt junior center Joe Villani and senior Kellen Campbell -- earned scholarships as a reward for their hard work and their contributions to the team and program.

"Every program encourages walk-on players to come on your roster and it is great, fantastic to be able to reward these guys," Wannstedt said. "That was a real upbeat thing for our team and primarily for those players."
