WTAE received the most Mid-Atlantic Regional Emmy nominations of any Pittsburgh television outlet, pitting its anchors and reporters against one another in several categories.
WTAE had 14 nods, WQED received 11, KDKA had four, Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh had three and WPXI had two. Comcast's CN8, which is carried on Pittsburgh cable systems, received 28 nominations, but the channel originates from Philadelphia.
As stations, WPXI and WPGH do not enter the regional Emmys, although individual employees sometimes do.
Perhaps the most intriguing showdown is between the 6 p.m. newscasts on KDKA and WTAE, both nominees in the single news broadcast category.
In the individual achievement categories, WTAE's Wendy Bell is up against WTAE's Michelle Wright for best news anchor; Bell faces off with WTAE's Jim Parsons in the reporter/informational category; three WQED employees -- David Solomon, Pierina Morelli and Tonia Caruso -- vie for the best writer/programming Emmy.
Also noteworthy: WTAE's "Battleground Pennsylvania: A Town Hall Meeting," moderated by the late ABC news anchor Peter Jennings, was nominated for best talk program, one-time-only special for the work of news director Bob Longo, assistant news director Matthew Hilk, executive producer Roberta Petterson, producer Debbi Casini Klein.
Nominations are for reports broadcast predominantly in 2004 (the eligibility period was April 1, 2004, to March 31, 2005). Winners will be announced at a ceremony Sept. 17 in Philadelphia.
