When the weather begins to cool -- it's hard to imagine that now, but trust me, it will -- women can expect anything but a winter of discontent in matters of fashion.

Ultra-feminine pieces continue to influence the style scene, glamming up belted boy sweaters and military-inspired jackets.
And bohemian looks continue strong but take on a new twist.
"It's not about converting spring and summer pieces into fall wear," said Lazarus spokeswoman Heather Hannan. "It's more about fashion favorites making an encore. Tunics, tiered skirts, shrugs and stacked bangles that comprise the bohemian chic look continue into fall in darker colors and heavier fabrications."
Other fall choices include fur trim lending dazzle to daywear. Skirts with matching jackets appear in curve-hugging, hourglass silhouettes, pants get drainpipe-skinny legs or chic high waists, and blouses are super-romantic, with dramatically cut sleeves and intricate embellishments.
Dresses from baby-doll shapes to cocktail numbers sport empire waists with pretty detailing at the bosom. Lace in white, black or gold (welcome news for hard-core Steelers fans) becomes trim or overlay on tops, sweaters and dresses, while evening dresses rise above the knee and may sport a pouffed skirt.
The statement coat -- unusual in design, drape or color scheme -- becomes a must-have. Ellen Tracy, Zang Toi, Alvin Valley, Shelly Steffee, Derek Lam, Tocca, Reem Acra, Douglas Hannant and Custo Barcelona are among American designers who describe some sort of uncommon overcoat as a season essential.
In accents, an oversized necklace complements casual and special occasion outfits. Also watch for such ensemble-completers as flat-sole and wedge boots, the opulence of velvet and brocade in many shoes, newsboy caps and cloches, and roomy, rectangular handbags.
The rush of rich color in the past year has generated more popular interest in fashion and boosted industry sales, so it's no surprise that fall and winter will see plenty more, and in intriguing combinations. Metallics and iridescent finishes can add glimmer and shine to all.
