Two men were arraigned yesterday in Murrysville on charges they propositioned young girls for sex in Internet chat rooms, not knowing the "girls" were undercover police officers.
Attorney General Tom Corbett announced that agents from his "child predator" unit, working with officers from North Huntingdon, West Mifflin and the University of Pittsburgh police, arrested Jack Ulrich Jr., 27, of Lawrenceville, and Richard Schirf, 27, of Hempfield. Both were charged with felony criminal attempt to have unlawful contact with a minor and criminal use of a communication facility.
According to court records, attorney general's agents posing as 12- and 13-year-old girls were contacted in early March in a Yahoo chat room by Ulrich, who then lived in West Mifflin. Over several days Ulrich sent electronic photos of his body to the "girls" and supplied a mailing address so they could reciprocate with nude pictures of their own.
Corbett said Ulrich arranged to meet with the 13-year-old on April 3, but did not show up at the rendezvous. On April 4 attorney general agents contacted West Mifflin police for help in arresting Ulrich. Officers there told the agent they already were looking into child pornography allegations made against Ulrich by his roommate, who'd found offensive images on the computer he shared with the suspect.
The agents seized the computer, and later arrested Ulrich.
On May 10, a female agent posing as a 12-year-old named Jessica allegedly was contacted by Schirf. He shared a collection of "anatomical photos" with the girl and described various acts he wanted to perform with her, court documents say.
They agreed to meet at a restaurant in North Huntingdon on May 25; Schirf was arrested. A search of his car turned up a Valentine card from a 16-year-old Latrobe girl Schirf said he also met on the Internet and met for sex a year ago, agents said.
Schirf and Ulrich were arraigned yesterday morning before District Judge Charles Conway.
