Hot spell brings swimming accidents
2 drowned, 3 rescued in region in past week
Wednesday, June 29, 2005

The sweltering weather has brought a spate of swimming accidents in Western Pennsylvania over the past week, including two drownings.

A 6-year-old boy drowned in his family's swimming pool in Bethel Park on Monday. Yesterday, a 6-year-old boy was rescued from the city's Schenley Park pool after lifeguards saw him motionless in the water.

A similar rescue involving a 4-year-old boy occurred at Sandcastle Water Park on Monday. Last week, a man drowned in a creek in Washington County and a toddler was pulled from a wading pool in the city's Marshall-Shadeland neighborhood.

The Allegheny County coroner's office yesterday ruled Monday's death of Benjamin Vensak, 6, of Bethel Park, an accidental drowning.

Benjamin, of Falla Drive, spent part of Monday swimming in the in-ground pool, said police Lt. David Rogan. Benjamin returned to the pool area at the request of his mother, Cynthia Vensak, who asked him to pick up pizza boxes and other litter, Rogan said.

He seemed to be taking a long time on a small chore, causing his mother to become concerned. Then, at 7:25 p.m., Rogan said, neighbor Michael Lynn spotted Benjamin in the pool, unconscious.

Lynn had started cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the boy before police arrived, about three minutes later. Rogan said Benjamin was wearing a T-shirt, shorts and socks when his body was discovered. Emergency crews transported Benjamin to St. Clair Hospital, where he died at 8:15 p.m.

Police said they were unclear on how long the boy had been in the water.

"There could be some further investigation," Rogan said.

Yesterday afternoon, a 6-year-old was taken from shallow water at the Schenley pool in Oakland. Mike Radley, assistant director of Citiparks, said the boy was conscious and alert before being taken to the hospital.

On Monday, LaDonna Evans of Wheeling, W.Va., scooped an unconscious 4-year-old boy out of Sandcastle's 31/2-foot-deep Sandbar pool and summoned lifeguards. The boy was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

On Saturday, divers in Washington County recovered the body of John D. Tressler, an inexperienced swimmer who drowned in Ten Mile Creek.

Investigators said Tressler, 29, of Ronco in Fayette County, ventured into the water alone during a family outing Friday afternoon.

Last week, a 2-year-old Marshall-Shadeland girl was found face down in a wading pool by her mother. The toddler probably tripped into the inflatable green pool. She was resuscitated by emergency crews.
