| Steve Mellon, Post-Gazette Family members comfort each other after a two-year-old Marshall-Shadeland girl was found face down in a wading pool yesterday afternoon. The girl was revived and was later breathing on her own, police said. |
Emergency crews arrived around 1:45 p.m., and shortly after, a paramedic rushed out, carrying a girl in his arms, neighbors said.
"It was shocking. Her skin color was green and her body was loose," said Bertha Kowach, who lives across the street from the family. Bob Schmidt, who lives up the block, said the girl "looked like a rag doll."
Kowach, 46, said the girl's mother, Vicky Shamonsky, looked distraught and the front of her shirt was sopping wet.
Police Sgt. Joseph Gannon said the near drowning appeared to be an accident, but said that whenever a child is seriously hurt, it is standard procedure to notify the police bureau's Sex Assault and Family Crisis unit.
The back yard of the house at 2330 Atmore St., where Vicky Shamonsky was also raised by her mother, was scattered with assorted toys -- rubber balls, a miniature basketball hoop and a small bike.
Neighbors often saw Justice and her older brother, who is about 4, playing back there. At a recent baby shower, Kowach said, Justice was toddling tentatively around, trying out her limited new vocabulary.
