Uniforms for Zambia, a Mt. Lebanon High School freshman's project to turn people's unwanted stuff into school uniforms for children in Africa, already has raised $945 and has been extended through July 15.
For the effort, originally set to run through June 4, 15-year-old Caylin McKee asked people to auction things on eBay via We Sell Now, a Robinson business, and give her part or all of the proceeds.
The number of people who have participated "is a surprise," Caylin said. People brought everything from worn clothing to a slot machine. Several people even wrote checks for the cause.
Since the project is to help Zambian children get the uniforms, quite a few people donated clothing. Caylin is wiring the money she raises to Hohliebi, an educational organization in Lenk, Switzerland, that also runs a camp in Zambia. Hohleibi will have the uniforms made in Zambia, a process McKee will get to see when she attends the camp next month.
Asked about the response so far, Caylin said, "I am very happy with it!"
