TODAY (May 30, 2005)
LAWRENCEVILLE: The Allegheny & St. Mary Association and the Allegheny Cemetery Historical Association sponsor the annual Memorial Day Service, (following the parade), with a special program at Allegheny Cemetery's Soldier's Memorial. The service honors those of all wars who have given their lives for our freedoms. The parade assembles 9:30 a.m., on Liberty Ave., proceeding to St. Mary's Cemetery, entering Allegheny Cemetery at Butler Street, and continuing to the Soldier's Memorial. Included in the parade are The Parade Motorcycle Unit, Buffalo Soldiers, 9th Pennsylvania Reserves, Company A, Vietnam Veterans Inc., Military Veterans, the Post Office Alumni Band, and other community groups. Doves are released in support of our troops, and as a salute to fallen heroes of the Iraq War. Following the service, an old-fashioned family outing takes place, noon to 2 p.m., at Allegheny Cemetery's Butler Street Fountain and Pool Area. Civil War re-enactments and demonstrations, historical characters in period costume, and bagpipe and banjo entertainment are part of the event. SQUIRREL HILL: American Legion Post 577, holds a Memorial Day Observance, 11 a.m., Forbes-Dallas Parklet (across from Homewood Cemetery). Following the ceremony, refreshments are served at the Legion Hall, 5857 Forbes Ave. In the event of rain, the observance is held in the Hall. TOMORROW
CARRICK/GREENFIELD/HILL DISTRICT: School District residents are invited to a community meeting to obtain input on creating a plan to realign schools and resources for educational enhancement. Presentations include information for the entire district, as well as data and discussion about the schools and facilities in nearby communities. Meetings are 6 p.m. today, Milliones Middle School, 3117 Centre Ave., Hill District; 6 p.m. tomorrow, Greenfield Elementary School, One Alger St., Greenfield and 6 p.m., Thursday, Carrick High School, 125 Parkfield St., Carrick.
