Verona is one step away from getting a public dock on the Allegheny River, though it's quite a large step.
Dori Martin, coach and executive director of the Steel City Rowing Club, said last week that the dock has been delivered and the steel poles supporting the dock have been installed.
Due to excessive sedimentation deposited after the floods in September, though, the dock area as currently designed is located on land rather than in the water. Martin said the plans have to be redesigned with the walkway extended farther into the river to meet the dock.
Martin is not certain of what additional costs will be incurred to correct the problem.
The dock and associated walking ramp are being built in the James Street waterfront area as a joint project between the borough and the Friends of the Riverfront. The borough is not assuming any costs for the project but acted as a sponsor for a $23,000 grant for the work.
"The Friends of the Riverfront are committed to making this work," Martin said.
New drawings for the dock and walkway will be submitted to the Army Corps of Engineers for approval. Once approval is received, she said, the project can proceed.
Cost, not including the price for extension of the walkway, is $41,480. Money has been placed into an escrow account by the Friends of the Riverfront to fund the work.
"We've been very grateful for the help" provided by the Friends of the Riverfront, Martin said.
