Primary 2005: Election could spell power shift on Moon school board
Thursday, May 19, 2005

Voters still angry with last May's passage of a controversial $76.5 million bond issue to fund construction at the middle and high schools elected three new members to the Moon Area school board and set the stage for a November race that could decide which party controls the nine-member body.

Republicans Benjamin Bonham, Carol Cellini-Dillon, and Mark Limbruner will run uncontested in November after taking three of the four spots last night on both the Democratic and Republican slates. The three ran along with fellow GOP member Kenneth Bradburn on a platform based on opposition to the project.

Democrat Gary Aiello took the remaining position on his party's slate and will face Bradburn for the final seat on the board in what promises to be a heated race.

"I think the public was tired of the current board's attitude on the project and wouldn't listen to the public via a referendum, so we tried to frame the election as a referendum, and people overwhelmingly came out to support us," Limbruner said.

Limbruner, who has run for school board in the past, led all vote-getters on each slate. "Now we're down to a two man race for control of the board," he said.

At present board President Mark Scappe heads a five- member Democratic majority on the board -- all of whom favored the building project -- including Mary Jane Sandman, who was appointed to the board in September, but was defeated last night.

Incumbent Donald Radovich, a Republican with an independent streak, favored the building project. He finished fifth on his party's slate behind Cellini-Dillon.

Barbara Nolfi leads a three-member Republican minority, including board members Sam Tranter and Greg Meiers who will step down in November, who opposed the plan. Tranter ran unopposed Tuesday night for the Republican candidacy of treasurer of Crescent.

Tuesday night's results split the divide at four members a piece, making the November race between Aiello and Bradburn crucial.
