Smoke, gas caused 3 deaths in Cambria County
Monday, May 16, 2005

The three victims of a house fire early Saturday in Hastings died of toxic smoke and gas inhalation, Cambria County Deputy Coroner Jeffrey Lees said yesterday.

Jordan English, 3, his grandmother, Delores Holland, 50, and a house guest, Alisha McConnell, 15, were killed in the fire, which the state police fire marshal's office said was caused when a candle ignited a couch in a first-floor enclosed porch.

Three people escaped the fire. Holland's fiance, John Sexton, who was injured jumping from the roof, and a 14-year-old were taken to Miners Hospital in Cambria County. Another 14-year-old was treated and released.

The fire marshal's office said in a statement that it appeared the fire was an accident, but an investigation continued.

Gibbons Funeral Home, Ashville, was handling arrangements for Holland and McConnell.

Visitation for McConnell is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. A Mass will be celebrated tomorrow at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Patton.

Services for Holland and English were private.
