Post-Gazette wins 12 Golden Quills

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last night won 12 Golden Quill Awards at the Hilton Pittsburgh, Downtown, including the best-of-show award for print journalism.

The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania honored Bob James, retired reporter from KQV Radio, with the President's Award, and Helen Fallon, chairwoman of Point Park University's Department of Journalism & Mass Communications, with the Service to Journalism Award.

The following award winners also won best-of-show awards:

The Post-Gazette won the Ray Sprigle Memorial Award for daily newspapers and wire services with circulation over 45,000 for its coverage of the flooding of September 2004.

The Sprigle Award for non-daily newspapers and magazines went to Pittsburgh City Paper's Rich Lord for his report on a developer's attempt to win a slot machine license.

In the category that honors daily publications with circulation under 45,000, the winner was the staff of the Washington Observer-Reporter for a report entitled "High Schoolers and Sex."

Scott Danka and Jeff Roupe of KDKA-TV won the Ed Romano Memorial Award for photography/videography.

The Ed King Memorial Award for television went to Gordon Loesch of WPXI-TV, and the King award for radio went to Robert W. Dickey of KQV Radio.

The James J. Cuddy Memorial Award, given to a journalism student, went to Rochelle Hentges of the University of Pittsburgh.
