ASSET celebrates 10th anniversary
Thursday, April 14, 2005

ASSET Inc., known for hands-on science education in elementary and middle schools, is celebrating its 10th anniversary today.

Started by Bayer Corp. and other partners in 1994, the nonprofit organization began with elementary science education and now serves 45 school districts, charter and private schools in the region.

ASSET, which stands for Achieving Student Success Through Excellence in Teaching, provides standards-based science materials and professional development programs for teachers.

It used to rely on money from the National Science Foundation, but now is self-sustaining.

The celebration will be tonight at the Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center.

Westinghouse Electric Co. will be honored with the first ASSET Educational Leadership Award.
