KU Resources Inc. hired Kenneth Krupowicz, Gary Thurheimer and Nadine Stanislaw in its Duquesne office. Krupowicz joined the civil and geotechnical engineering team; Thurheimer is project manager of environmental remediation projects; and Stanislaw is the new marketing coordinator.

Chiz Brothers Inc. named Randy A. Pingree president and chief financial officer.

Health and Medicine

Kukurin Chiropractic announced the addition of Dr. Michael R. Cutitta to its South Side office.

Joanne R. Oleck, M.D., joined Jan Seski, MD. She primarily will be based in the new office located on Lebanon Church Road, West Mifflin. Oleck is certified in gynecologic-pelvic surgery.

Pittsburgh Mercy Health System named A.J. Pinevich, MD, to the newly created position of vice president of quality and patient safety, Pittsburgh Mercy Health System; and Kaveh Ilkhanipour was named president of the medical staff at Mercy Hospital.

Family Health Council elected Elizabeth A. Teti chair and named new board members: Susan M. Nelson, guidance counselor, Kane Area School District; Sarita Rodriguez, case manager, Hispanic American Council; Carol S. Stilley, assistant director, cognitive core and a project director, University of Pittsburgh's Center for Research in Chronic Disorders; and Neil E. Todhunter, president and CEO, UPMC Northwest.

Insurance

Marsh Inc. announced that Robert Brannigan of its Pittsburgh office was named managing director.

Law

Thomas G. Buchanan, shareholder, Buchanan Ingersoll, was named co-chair of the corporate finance & technology group. Buchanan also is co-chair of the venture capital & emerging companies group and a member of the mergers & acquisitions and antitrust and trade regulation groups. Wendelynne J. Newton was named head of the Pittsburgh office's litigation practice. Newton's practice focuses on antitrust and trade regulation issues, as well as on life insurance litigation.

Burns White & Hickton hired two new associates. Erin Beckner will concentrate in transportation law, pulmonary division. Amanda Sargent specializes in the areas of transportation law and railroad litigation.

Philip J. Uher joined Metz Lewis as a member focusing on bankruptcy and creditors' rights issues.

Del Monte Foods Co. named Victor L. Lund, former vice chairman of Albertson's Inc., to its board.

Communifax hired Vanessa Capozzi as vice president, client services, and Berni Thomas was promoted to vice president, human resources and administrative services.

Business Notes

FedEx Ground, the Moon-based ground delivery unit of FedEx Corp., said it would consolidate operations in Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach, Fla., at a new automated distribution center in Pompano Beach. The center will open by summer 2006.

Name Changes

Pittsburgh Automobile Trade Association changed its name to Greater Pittsburgh Automobile Dealers Association.

New Business/New Offices

Liberty Electronic Payment Services announced the opening of its Cranberry office, 2225 Cambridge Court, Cranberry. Sharon Carter was appointed regional manager. LEPS offers a variety of merchant services including credit and debit card processing, gift card programs, e-commerce processing and electronic check conversion.

Barnes & Noble today opened a new bookstore adjacent to South Hills Village mall. The store employs 55 and features a children's department, music-listening system and Wi-Fi service.

Donna Uhrig opened FASTFRAME at 110 West McMurray Road. Hours are 10 a.m to 6 p.m., Monday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday. Additionally, the store adjacent to FASTFRAME store is a seamstress business owned by Donna and her partners, Diane Bushmire and Amy Fornear. The shops are side by side, with joining French doors at the front of each store. The frame shop focuses on home decorating ideas and home decorations and alterations on the seamstress side.

Investment consulting veterans Thomas R. Pipich, CFA and Jeffrey C. Boucek, CFA have reunited in an independent investment consulting firm designed to provide advice to the institutional and high net worth markets. The firm, Pipich Boucek Partners, is located at 110 Roessler Road, Suite 301, Scott.

Contracts

Giant Ideas was named creative agency of record by MyWireless.org for an advertising and marketing campaign to promote key messages for the new wireless advocacy organization.

Dr. Terry Krysinski, medical director of Cosmetic Laser CentersSM, has retained the services of Integra Marketing Group of Beaver Falls. Integra Marketing Group will help Dr. Krysinski market his Cosmetic Laser Center concept throughout the region.

Doug Zappi Dzign of Cabot will design a corporate identity and packaging for Pflueger's Chocolate Co.

Adonix announced that The Garland Company Inc. selected the Adonix X3 Process suite to help accelerate its growth plans and integrate processes and data into a single enterprise-wide solution.

PDG Environmental Inc. was awarded three unit-price, term contracts with the New York City Department of Housing Preservation & Development. Each contract is for an initial term of one year with an option to extend for two additional years. The contracts are for lead paint abatement in private and city-owned apartment buildings within the five boroughs of New York City.

CIC Pittsburgh will engineer and provide combustion and controls for two ladle heaters for a central Mexico carbon ateel producer.

Massaro Corp. was awarded a general construction contract of about $8 million to complete renovations to the Heflin Student Union at Glenville State College, W.Va.

Herr-Voss Stamco signed a contract with Daedong Steel Co. Ltd. in Seoul, Korea, to provide a roller leveler to be used in one of their cut-to-length lines. The leveler will process hot rolled steel up to .500 inch thick by 74 inches wide.

TravelCenters of America hired IdeaMill as advertising agency for brand and major campaign activity.

Awards/Honors

Roche honored medical representative and Pittsburgh resident Ann Marie Laird with the company's special achievement award. She received the award for her commitment to patient care and outstanding sales performance.

Matt Pitzarella, a media and local governmental representative for Duquesne Light, recently was named "Young PR Professional of the Year 2005" in a national competition sponsored by PRWeek magazine. The award, which was presented in New York City, is open to public relations professionals who entered the field within the past three years. Pitzarella is the first winner from the Pittsburgh area in the seven-year history of the awards. There were almost 1,200 entrants in the young professional category.

Kenneth S. Ramsey, president and chief executive officer, Gateway Rehabilitation Center, received the 2005 Health Care Hero Executive Award. The health-care executive award was one of eight awards presented to individuals or organizations in recognition of their efforts to improve the quality of health care for residents of the Pittsburgh area. The executive award honors an individual for implementation of innovative programs to improve patient care or business practices, demonstrated results, and personal dedication evidencing commitment beyond the scope of the position in leading a health care institution or organization. Health Care Hero Awards is sponsored by World Health and Med Tech.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania's Communications Group won two awards in the 20th annual national Admissions Marketing Report competition. The "Welcome to IUP" video, produced by videographer Bill Hamilton and featuring IUP theater major Brett Mack of Indiana, won a gold award in the competition. IUP Magazine, edited by Karen Gresh, IUP director of communications, won an award of merit in the competition.

For its efforts to advance equal employment opportunities in the workplace, Life's Work of Pittsburgh, along with three other companies and organizations nationwide, received the exemplary public interest award at an annual awards ceremony hosted by the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP).

Verizon Wireless was named to Training magazine's 2005 list of "Top 100 Training Organizations in America." 2005 marks the fourth consecutive year Verizon Wireless has been recognized for its training and development programs. This year, Verizon Wireless is ranked No. 14, up from No. 20 last year.

Cleveland-based New Day Enterprises announced the selection of chefs at four distinctive Pittsburgh restaurants whose one-of-a-kind signature dressings have been bottled under New Day's 4CHEFS of brand, and are now available in Giant Eagle supermarkets throughout Western Pennsylvania. The chefs are: Franco Gaccetta of Franco's Ristorante, Aspinwall; Kevin Hunninen of Isabella on Grandview, Mount Washington; Sabatino DiBattista of VIVO, Bellevue; and Tom Rebstock of Bruschetta's, South Side.

Herbert S. Shear, chairman and CEO, Genco , is the recipient of the Salzberg Medallion presented by the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. Salzberg Medallions are awarded to outstanding practitioners, advocates, academicians or researchers in the field of transportation, distribution and logistics management, and to companies for pioneering ideas and policies that have reshaped the industry.

Vivisimo Inc. was named to KM World's "100 Companies That Matter" for 2005, the third year in a row. In addition, PC Magazine also named Vivisimo's consumer Web site Clusty.com as a "Top 100 Web Site" for 2005.

The Community College of Allegheny County has received a silver award for innovation in technology from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations. The recognition was for the college Web site's interactive virtual tour of multicampus facilities -- designed to highlight accessible routes for students with disabilities. The NCMPR's Paragon awards competition honors outstanding achievement in communications at community, junior and technical colleges nationwide.

Rebecca Rodrigues of Elizabeth won $1,000 cash in the sweepstakes in Northwest Savings Bank's Cards, Cars and Cash Sweepstakes.

Steve Pons, facility manager, Computer Associates and the local chapter president for the International Facility Manager Association, renewed (IFMA's) certified facility manager (CFM) credential. The CFM credential assures professional expertise and establishes standards of practice for the facility management profession worldwide.

American Corporate Identity, an annual corporate design competition and publication, announced that AF&A (Adam Filippo & Associates) received eight creative awards of excellence. Giant Eagle was named outstanding retailer by the International Council of Shopping Centers and the Environmental Protection Agency 2004 "America's Marketplace Recycles!" Awards program, which recognizes outstanding efforts and achievements by ICSC members to conserve resources, recycle, and purchase recycled content products at shopping centers across the country.

Paper Products Co. was named Pittsburgh District Merchant of the Year for 2004 by Kimberly-Clark Professional based on its 2004 case volume, net revenue and distinctive brand sales improvement.
