Tested for steroids before joining Pirates
Thursday, April 07, 2005

INDIANAPOLIS -- Spring training will last longer for outfielder Jon Nunnally and pitcher Brian Mallette.

They, along with infielder Tom Evans, are in the Pirates' extended spring training program in Bradenton, Fla., serving their suspensions for violation of Major League Baseball's minor-league steroids policy.

Evans' 15-game suspension from Class AA Altoona was announced Tuesday night. The Pirates yesterday announced the 15-game suspension for Nunnally and the 30-game suspension for Mallette, whose suspension is longer because this is his second violation.

A third violation draws a 60-game suspension.

"It's ongoing," Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield said of baseball's testing program. "We're making strides."

Nunnally, 33, and Mallette, 30, are on the Class AAA Indianapolis roster after being non-roster invitees to spring training. Neither figured to make the Pirates' 25-man opening-day roster.

"I can't comment on any of this," Indianapolis manager Trent Jewett said.

Littlefield has been the point man on announcing the suspensions and prefers all comment come from him.

The tests on Evans, Nunnally and Mallette all were done late last year and not this spring.

Nunnally played for Indianapolis last season, when it was Milwaukee's Class AAA affiliate. Nunnally has played in the majors for Kansas City, Cincinnati, Boston and the New York Mets. He has not played in the majors since 2000.

Mallette last season played for Louisville, Cincinnati's Class AAA farm team. He pitched in five games for Milwaukee in 2002, his only big-league experience.

Both Nunnally and Mallette also played in Japan -- Nunnally for Orix in 2000 and Mallette for Osaka in 2003.
