Make mine a must-have
Sunday, April 03, 2005

Every season brings its share of fashion pieces that merit a place in every wardrobe. Besides that must-have trench coat, we suggest seven must-haves for women, three gotta-gets for men and five necessities for both.

Women

A tie-front, ruffle-trimmed, embroidered jacket ($598), silk shell ($220) and pencil skirt ($220) by Antonio D'Errico combine turquoise and lime green at e.b. Pepper, 5411 Walnut St., Shadyside.

The butterfly effect. The fluttering friends are easy to find on handbags, skirts, dresses and scarves. Or use a butterfly a pin to accent a jacket or top.

Cropped jacket. It goes equally well with capris, skirts and dresses. Boucle tweed styles and colorful suede versions are abundant, and many have bracelet sleeves that let you show off your jeweled arm candy.

Faux reptile. Whether it's a bag, shoes, jacket or belt of any color, the piece should look and feel like lizard or alligator skin.

Turquoise. A key color this season, many designers combined it with a bright shade of green in dresses and suits.

Rockin' Moroccan: A colorful tunic top, caftan or full skirt embellished with beads or sequins lends an ethnic feel to warm-weather looks.

Metallic mania. The warm, rich glimmer of gold, copper or bronze in threading or as a fabric sheen will make you feel like a million bucks.

Wedge heels. For added height, strappy summer chic and a funky '70s vibe.

Men

Bright colors paint men's fashions: A deep orange silk sportcoat by Ibiza ($395) and a striped sport shirt by Bamboo ($195) jazz up white silk flat-front pants by Nat Nast ($150) from Heinz Healey's, Station Square.

Colorful blazer. And we don't mean navy. Think hot orange, sunflower yellow or sky blue. Go for the look in luxurious lightweight fabrics such as silk, linen or a blend of the two.

Vintage prep. An entire ensemble or a single piece can achieve it. Components to consider: retro-rock T-shirts, distressed denim, track jackets with striped sleeves, canvas Converse All-Star remakes, baggy plaid Bermuda shorts and polo shirts in wacky colors.

Embroidery. No, not floral motifs. Go for subtle abstract designs on jeans, button-up shirts and jackets.

Women and men

A white suit or white pants. Wear one or the other as part of a head-to-toe whiteout or with bright colors and prints.

Spectator style. Be seen in dramatic, full-on black and white. Whether you go with patterns or solid pieces, the combo of cool white and sophisticated black is a head-turner.

Distressed denim. If the jean or jacket looks like it was dragged a few blocks, you want it -- even better if the manufacturer's wash makes it look dirty.

Large sunglasses. Michael Kors, Chanel and Silhouette started super-sizing shades. Now they're gigantic -- and ooze big-city slickness -- in every frame style and shape.

Fun belt. Anything out of the ordinary, ranging from large beaded macrame swag belts for her to two-color striped D-ring styles for him.

Retro prints and neon play well against white. Kaylen wears a chartreuse jacket ($990) and white pant ($335) by Akris Punto with white Chanel sunglasses ($305) and a Pucci hat ($198) from Saks Fifth Avenue, Downtown.
