Community to design new Cranberry skateboard park
Wednesday, March 30, 2005

Skateboarders and wannabes, as well as their parents, will get a chance to help design the new skateboard park that's to be built in Cranberry, thanks to a grant from American Eagle Outfitters.

The design meeting will be held between 5 and 8 p.m. April 7 in the Rochester Road municipal center.

The skateboard park will be built behind the center on a pad once used to hold impounded vehicles, according to Parks and Recreation Director Mike Diehl.

The public meeting will be coordinated by KaBOOM!, a 10-year-old, national, nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C., that works through corporate, foundation, association and individual donors to build and improve skateboard parks across the country.

The meeting will be held to collect information on features to include in the design and to recruit parents to assist in the daylong Community Build Day, tentatively set for June 18.

That's when the skatepark's prefabricated modules will be assembled, Diehl said.

Cranberry Manager Jerry Andree estimated the total project cost at $100,000.

The bulk of the funding, about $70,000, will be provided by American Eagle.

He said the township will contribute the balance, about $10,000 in cash with the rest in manpower.

Cranberry supervisors gave Andree the go-ahead to work with KaBOOM! a month ago.

Skateboarders have asked Cranberry officials several times in recent years for a park where they could enjoy their sport.

Township officials made the facility a priority last year by providing for it in the 2004 budget.

The unspent money has been carried over into this year's budget.
