Obituary: Vincent J. Monteleone/Trumpeter, teacher and sports car enthusiast
Friday, March 11, 2005

Vincent J. Monteleone, an accomplished trumpeter who received the advertising industry's Golden Reel awards for his work on jingles for commercials such as "Alcoa Can't Wait" and "You've Got a Friend in Pennsylvania," died Monday of a heart attack. He was 57, and lived in Churchill, with his wife, Celeste.

Mr. Monteleone grew up in Butler and attended Butler High School. After graduating, he toured Europe with the School Band of America, performing in such places as St. Mark's Square in Venice.

When Mr. Monteleone returned to Pittsburgh, he enrolled in Duquesne University, where he eventually earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in music. For the past 20 years, he taught music at Duquesne.

When he wasn't teaching, Mr. Monteleone could be found playing around town and leading Towne and Company, a local band that performed mostly for weddings and private functions.

"We played together at the old Holiday House," said trumpeter Danny Conn. "He was a very good trumpet player and teacher."

In 1977, Mr. Monteleone was involved in the production of the jingle for "Alcoa Can't Wait." Four years later, he helped create the music for "You've Got a Friend in Pennsylvania."

"He did a wonderful job," said Ray Werner, former creative director for Ketchum Advertising. Werner wrote the theme line and lyrics to the state slogan.

"The song was the backbone of the campaign for eight years. It was later used in radio and television marketing and made its way onto thousands of license plates."

Mr. Monteleone also enjoyed racing and restoring old cars, including Triumphs and Panteras. Driving a Gemini Club Ford in 2000 and 2001, Mr. Monteleone won the Mid-Ohio Points championships.

"He had only one way to do things," said longtime friend Ken Merusi. "He was a perfectionist when it came to playing his music and racing."

In addition to his wife, Mr. Monteleone is survived by his brother, Thomas of Greensburg.

A Mass will be celebrated today at 10 a.m. at Duquesne University Chapel.

Contributions may be made to the Vincent J. Monteleone Performance Trumpet scholarship at Duquesne University, 600 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh 15282.
