NFL Notebook: Steelers rework 3 more contracts
Thursday, March 03, 2005

The Steelers have restructured three more contracts in order to be in compliance with the NFL's $85.5 million salary cap that went into effect yesterday. Center Jeff Hartings, linebacker Clark Haggans and running back Duce Staley reworked their contracts to gain salary cap room this year for the team. They joined James Farrior, who also restructured his contract.

The three latest restructurings will save the Steelers nearly $4 million under the salary cap. Combined with Farrior's reworked deal that saved them slightly more than $1 million, the four new deals created $5 million worth of room under their salary cap for 2005.

Ravens

Derrick Mason has agreed in principle to a five-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens, giving the team one of the most desirable receivers on the free-agent market and filling the most glaring need of a team that ranked 31st in passing last season. Mason, 31, was second in the NFL with 96 receptions last season for Tennessee.

Eagles

Oft-injured running back Correll Buckhalter agreed to a two-year contract with Philadelphia. Buckhalter had a tear in the patella tendon in his right knee and is coming off his second season-ending knee injury in three years.

Raiders

Randy Moss officially joined Oakland as the Raiders completed a trade with the Minnesota Vikings for the star receiver. As part of that new start, Moss is changing his jersey number to 18. The Vikings receive linebacker Napoleon Harris, the No. 7 pick in April's draft and a late-round pick in the swap.

Broncos

Defensive tackle Gerard Warren, a high-draft pick and big disappointment with Cleveland, was traded to Denver for a fourth-round selection in this year's draft.

Colts

Indianapolis released veteran tight end Marcus Pollard, saving the team an immediate $2.65 million against the NFL salary cap. Other Colts starters who became free agents included guard Rick DeMulling, safety Idrees Bashir, cornerback Nick Harper and middle linebacker Rob Morris.

Elsewhere

The Bengals re-signed wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh to a four-year contract. ... The Cowboys signed cornerback Anthony Henry, who started 14 of 15 games for Cleveland last season. ... The Lions re-signed safety Bracy Walker to a one-year contract.
