Tuesday, March 01, 2005

The Carnegie Mellon men's basketball team is in a postseason tournament for the first time since 1976-77 and just the second time in school history.

The second-seeded Tartans (18-6), who have tied a school record for victories in a season, will play host to No. 7 Gettysburg (16-10) in the first round of the ECAC Division III Southern tournament at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Skibo Gym.

The semifinals of the eight-team event will be played Friday at the site of the highest remaining seed and the championship game will be Saturday.

Carnegie Mellon's only other appearance in the postseason was a loss to Witenberg in the first round of the NCAA tournament in 1976-77.

These Tartans were second in the University Athletic Association for their highest finish in the regular season and lost to Rochester in the championship game of the tournament.

The Gettysburg Bullets, which lost to Ursinus in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference tournament, feature 6-foot-6 center David Glaser who leads in scoring (17.3 ppg), rebounds (7.0 rpg), blocks (35) and asssists (59).

Carnegie Mellon's 6-4 Clayton Barlow-Wilcox (18.5 ppg) and 6-6 Nate Maurer (17 ppg, 7 rpg) were named to the UAA first team and 6-2 senior Michael Divens (14.2 ppg) of Penn-Trafford is on the second team.

Coach Tony Wingen and his assistants were voted the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year.
