NBA Roundup: Pacers rout Magic, rejoin playoff race
Wednesday, February 23, 2005

Jermaine O'Neal scored 20 points in 22 minutes to help the visiting Indiana Pacers rout the Orlando Magic, 108-84, last night.

Fred Jones scored 18 points, Stephen Jackson had 13, and Greg Foster added 12 points and 11 rebounds for his 13th double-double.

The Pacers, winners of three in a row and six of eight, moved percentage points ahead of Philadelphia for the East's final playoff berth.

Steve Francis had one of his worst performances, scoring six points -- almost 16 below his season average -- while missing eight of 10 shots. He also committed four turnovers, and had only one assist.

That wasn't the worst news for Francis. Earlier, the team fined him for missing a practice after he failed to catch his flight from Houston on Monday.

Other games;

Pistons 97, Knicks 88: Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince each scored 19 points to lead host Detroit against New York, and to its fifth victory in a row and 10th in 11 games. Detroit's Chauncey Billups scored 15 points and had eight assists.

Bulls 105, Heat 101: Ben Gordon hit five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and overtime and scored 29 points to lead host Chicago against Miami, who lost Shaquille O'Neal in the opening minutes to a knee injury. X-rays showed no serious injury and O'Neal will be re-evaluated today.

Raptors 100, Nets 82: Vince Carter struggled in his first game against the team that traded him to New Jersey earlier this season, missing 17 of 25 shots while being outplayed by visiting Toronto's Jalen Rose. Rose led the Raptors on a 14-4 run early in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

SuperSonics 87, Rockets 85: Ray Allen scored 29 points, capped by two free throws with 16.7 seconds left, to help visiting Seattle snap Houston's eight-game winning streak. Houston had a chance with 5 seconds left, but Scott Padgett's shot fell short.

Bucks 112, Bobcats 102: Michael Redd scored 39 points in his return to Milwaukee's lineup, leading the visiting Bucks against Charlotte.

Kings 114, Hawks 104: Chris Wibber scored 30 points, Mike Bibby had 23 and host Sacramento beat Atlanta for just its second victory in eight games. Al Harrington scored 25 points in his return to the Hawks' starting lineup.

Lakers 104, Celtics 95: Kobe Bryant and Lamar Odom each scored 21 points as Los Angeles beat visiting Boston. Paul Pierce and reserve guard Ricky Davis each had 25 points for the Celtics.
