Male quilters on display
Wednesday, February 23, 2005

The artistry of male quilters -- 22 in all -- is the focus of an exhibition opening Sunday at Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg.

Titled Man-Made Quilts and on display through April 17, the show is designed to give visitors a chance to view the male artistic approach to a craft traditionally considered a woman's domain.

The exhibit was organized by the Museum of American Quilter's Society in Paducha, Ky. Included are the works of two local residents: Jim Mikula, a retired teacher from Ligonier, and Pete Buchan, a retired state trooper from Latrobe who also volunteers at Westmoreland's Museum Shop.

In addition, Pittsburgh artist Shawn Quinlan will be featured in a separate exhibition, Quilted Art, in the Walsh Gallery.

A free opening reception is set for 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Normal viewing hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and until 9 p.m. Thursday.

Additional activities related to this show include:

A gallery tour which Barbara Jones, the museum's curator, will lead at 7 p.m. March 10.

A noon April 6 lecture by Mikula that will focus on his quilt-making efforts.

Quilting demonstrations by Mikula from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 5 and 19 and April 9 and from 5 to 9 p.m. March 10 and 17 and April 7 and 14.

A class titled About Quilts for 10- to 12-year-olds from 10 a.m. to noon March 12. Each participant will get to make a personalized quilt square.

There's a $10 fee for the class; the other activities are free.
