Wehner, Bream seek analyst spot
Tuesday, February 22, 2005

Add John Wehner and Sid Bream to the list of candidates for the fifth spot on the Pirates' announcing team.

Wehner and Bream join Kent Tekulve and Mike LaValliere as candidates to be a color analyst for the team's road games. Wehner, Bream and LaValliere played with the Pirates in the early 1990s. Tekulve played in the 1970s. Tekulve is the only one of the four with significant experience. He spent seven years in the 1990s as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies' broadcasting team.

The position opened when color analyst Steve Blass opted to do only home games.

Wehner, a lifelong Pittsburgher, is scheduled to be a coach for the Pirates' Class AA affiliate at Altoona. He auditioned for the position Feb. 9, almost a month after Tekulve and LaValliere.

"I got permission from the team to do the audition and they said 'go for it.' I'm very interested. It's something I'd like to do."

Patty Paytas, the Pirates vice president for communications, said a decision would probably be announced this week.
